Cloud Magnetic Floating Sofa

Very much like the Magnetic Floating Bed, the Cloud Sofa is nothing less than a design masterpiece. Designed for ultra comfort and relaxation, the Cloud magnetically levitating sofa is the most amazing sofa concept I’ve ever come across. The magnetic force generated by the base offers support for the verrry soft upper part of the sofa. It would be a great thing to work, relax or powernap on. Unlike the magnetic floating bed, it’s not tethered with any steel cables. The soft cloud-like chaise lounge received an honorable mention at the RELAX furniture design contest.

Forget the water beds and swinging beds, this all new Millionaire’s Magnetic Floating Bed is going to make you look like you own the world. The bed floats in the air and can support up to 900kgs and is held by 4 very thin wires. This bed is expected to cost $1,200,000. As you might have guessed it you probably won’t be able to have anything metalic in the house once you have this bed installed. Its going to be plastic all over. For more info on the bed go to UniverseArchitecture and click on ”FloatingBed”. If you are interested in Magnetic Energy check out the post on Free Energy From Magnetic Motor. Magnetic floating couch This couch concept is probably what this whole project of magnetic floating furniture can turn into, a simple elegant and magic floating item in your living room.

The idea behind Wei’s concept of the Cloud floating couch is described as, “a sofa concept designed for ultra comfort and relaxation. The soft floating upper part is supported by the magnetic force generated by the bottom base. No matter if you want to work and sit with comfort or simply a power nap to release the stress, you can always enjoy your time to relax on the floating cloud.”

The Cloud Sofa currently in hypothetical existence is the brainchild of D.K. Wei, who won an honorable mention for it in Yanko Design’s 2009 RELAX furniture concept contest. The levitating, heavenly-looking pillow achieves its state of gravity defiance with the help of magnets. A magnetic force generated by the bottom base pushes against and holds steady the cloud, even when persons of average weight are sitting, lying, or getting high and pretending to go to World 5 of Super Mario Bros. 3 on it.

Cloud Magnetic Floating Sofa

The Cloud Sofa is a concept designed by D.K. & Wei that is a relaxing cloud chair that floats and hovers above the floor using magnets. Although this is not a real product, if it were real, I’m sure there would be a warning on the sofa saying “No Fatties”.

Hong Kong-based designers David Koo and Zheng Yawei came up with this astonishing concept design for a couch that we can only dream about for now. Yes, it’s a levitating couch that makes use of magnetic force from the bottom base to stay afloat. And it looks like a cloud. Their design nabbed an honourable mention in Yanko Design’s RELAX 2009 competition. If this isn’t magical, we don’t know what is. This. Needs. To. Be. Real. Now.

I have no probs with american ppl, just the dickheads who run it i.e. bush. That goes 4 all political leaders you guys stop blaming each other and blame the dipshit presidents and people who caused the bloody problem in the Middle east. Not all americans are fat, and not all muslims are terrorists, but i think most political leaders are dickheads. Oh and stop threatening each other with nukes and stuff, the bloddy american government is hardly going to fire missiles over a stupid online conversation about a floating bed. By the way, i’m australian, and 14 years old. But i think the bed is a great idea, apart from the magnetic field, that could get a bit annoying, and if the bed flips and sticks. But it looks great and could be comfortable with some more padding. Could do something about the flipping though. P.S. Sorry about your nuts Riotpack, but it is hilarious LOL. And any ppl fighting about the countries SHUT UP since bush helped al-qaeda in ww2 anyway.

Sounds comfy. Unfortunately the physics behind this floating sofa have yet to be worked out as natural magnets aren’t anywhere strong enough to support a person while allowing the sofa to remain stable and the power required to use electromagnets would be a tad on the expensive side. But hey, that why they are called concepts–ideas now and details later, right?

Gyroscopes could stabilize the sofa, like the Levitron toy, but they would have to be very large, consume a lot of power, and be rather noisy. Stabilizing with a diamagnet would require a very large, powerful, and impossibly expensive electromagnet. Stabilizing with a superconductor would be easier, but that has its own problems, including the need for cryogenics. For these and other possibilities for stabilization, see my book Rising Force: The Magic of Magnetic Levitation (Harvard, 2011).

The Cloud is a levitating sofa that floats thanks to magnets and, I suspect, a tiny wizard. Unfortunately, it’s only conceptual. Which, for those of you who don’t know what conceptual is, means really soft. You should buy one.

Hello David, We'd like to feature the Cloud Sofa for an exibition in Paris. (Already sent an email to kootouch@mail.com)Therefor, I would need the hi-res pictures. Could you please send them to me : lilydechampris@gmail.comYour name and website would of course be credited, as well as photo credit. Thanking you again for your help, Best Regards, Lily

Not quite. Most jewelry is not made of magnetic metals. I’ve never, not even once, had my jewelry get stuck to a magnet, unless it was specifically designed to do so.

This is a very unrealistic design, until there are technological advances to filter out where we would like to apply magnetic forces, this will not be possible. Its fine and dandy to just create a concept, and from this post DK you haven't given any of us readers assurance that this would ever be possible. To me at this moment it just suggests that this is as conceptual as an artists illustration.

Designed by D.K. Wei (no relation to that barrel throwing bastard), the Cloud recently won honorable mention (3rd loser) in a relaxation design contest. Which, wait a minute, relaxation design contest — WTF is that? Fifth of gin and a handful of Valium. BOOM, blue ribbon.

Thanks Matthew for your sharing. Fortunately enough, the Cloud is presented in a more matured level – aesthetically appealing with suggested object structures, which makes it interesting enough to touch people than barely words.

Commenter David Koo mentions science fiction, which is funny because this idea is a rip-off from a Kurt Vonnegut novel, “Sirens of Titan”, where there is a office with all floating furniture powered by magnets. This is definitely science fiction. Also, it's not a very original idea, or very inspiring. It seems mostly decadent.

I see a couple comments about the stability of such a concept as well as the requirements to make something like this work. It looks like some people are holding firm to Earnshaw's theorem, without completely understanding all possible aspects. A number of people could learn some fun little tricks from Theo Gray. He would also likely explain that one exception to this problem is diamagnetism which is a purely repulsive force as opposed to ferromagnetism (common North/South pole type). I don't want to plagarize Theo's work or book which I paid money for and feel he earned it for his efforts, but check him out at www.graysci.com and you might pick up a few other tricks to entertain yourselves. The biggest trick I can see to this furniture concept would be to keep it from floating away from the base and dropping to the floor due to a lack of friction to keep it in place.
