So, you busted your dog on the couch, oblivious and dreaming. It’s time to teach him the “off” cue, a dog-friendly way to get your dog to move from the furniture. Take a small treat and throw it on the ground a few feet away from the couch where your dog is resting. Say “off” and make a sweeping hand gesture as your dog moves from the couch. Saying the cue as your dog is doing the movement is a way of creating an association between his action and the cue – you’re basically teaching your dog English (and sign language)! If possible, immediately lead your dog to his bed and give him a treat and lots of praise for going to his bed instead of the couch. Always make sure to acknowledge your dog any time he opts to sleep on his own bed instead of the furniture.

My Labrador Retriever is FULLY trained and she’s obedient now (she can even do fun tricks) thanks to “The Online Dog Trainer ” (visit: TrainDogsOnline -dot- org ) – It is a WONDERFUL resource for learning how to train your dog without ever leaving home. It showed me great ways to teach my dog almost every single trick imaginable and how to correct the most common behavioral issues. It is full of carefully compiled videos that allow you to watch and listen to their expert solving the exact problem you’re having with your dog, with another real dog and its owner. You can see the precise body language he uses, how the tone of his voice changes, and how the dogs respond, changing their behavior almost immediately. It’s remarkable to see how quickly my dog picked up on these methods. She is PERFECT now! From what I understand, the information on that webiste works for any age or breed of dog. I feel blessed to know my dog is trained properly and effectively Gotta love the Internet!

If you opt to keep your dog off the couch, make sure to provide him with a comfy alternative. Instead of giving your dog a flat pad-style dog bed, select a donut bed that has a bolster, which gives him something to lean up against. Keep the bed close to where you hang out and consider investing in a few beds so that your dog has a home base in all of your primary living spaces, like the kitchen, bedroom and family room. You can make his special bed even more enticing by frequently anchoring a treat-stuffed toy to it. Attach a thin rope to a hard rubber toy, fill it with peanut butter or treats, then tie the rope to a nearby table leg or other piece of heavy furniture that’s close to your dog’s bed. Your dog will soon understand that delicious things happen when he hangs out on his bed!

This simple leash technique should help to stop dog jumping. Whenever your dog looks like he wants to jump up, place your foot on the leash. Leave enough slack to keep him from noticing your foot is on the leash but not enough to let him jump all the way up. When he tries to jump, say “Off!”. If your foot is placed properly, the leash will automatically correct your dog. Tell him to sit and gently praise him when he does. Eventually, your dog will learn that jumping up causes an unpleasant tug on his neck while sitting leads to your affection. Remember to remove the leash when your dog can’t be supervised.

Doggonecouchcover is amazing! We use one on our sofa and it keeps the dog off and the couch pet hair free! Foil like material on one side, and a nice fabric on the other. Just unroll and use to deter dog from sofa. Roll up and use for a nice, CLEAN, pillow or couch roll when not using to keep dog off sofa.

The least confrontational way to deal with OFF is to turn and/or back away from the dog when he jumps on you, using the OFF command, then SIT. Always PRAISE when the dog makes the correct choice. Most jumping dogs can be seen before they make contact. Try raising a knee in the air BEFORE the dog connects with you, and use the OFF command. Jumping on you will be difficult and uncomfortable because your knee will be in the way, and some of the more exuberant dogs will hit your knee and find it unpleasant. If you raise your knee AS the dog jumps on you, your timing will be off, and your dog may be hurt. I don’t recommend this method because it may be too forceful for some dogs and may cause injury, it puts you off balance and is not a nice gesture for other people (especially kids) to see.

My favorite method to teach “OFF” is to have a training collar on the dog and put him in a sit in front of you with his leash attached to the collar. Let the leash dangle onto the floor, and firmly step on the leash where it angles onto the floor. “Set up” the training by making the jumping inviting (talking cute, “eating” a treat, etc). When the dog tries to jump, he will self correct WHILE you are telling him “OFF! SIT!”. Do this several times in a row, and most dogs will start to get the idea after the 2nd or 3rd try. Some of the more exuberant dogs will seem to be dense about it, and have to be reminded a little firmer. This method needs to be done a couple times a day, for several days or more. Each time you practice, the dog will remember quicker. After you think the dog understands what “OFF” means, you can then do the same thing with the leash, but actually act like you are inviting him to jump: tap on your chest with both hands, talking cute – “Do you want to come up?” and then reinforce with “NO, OFF, SIT!”. Be careful you don’t praise so enthusiastically that you inadvertently encourage your dog to jump up again.

Often starting during puppyhood, dog jumping can be a serious behavior problem. It seems innocent while your dog is young, but as he grows it can become extremely irritating. This is especially true if he’s from a larger breed, although toy dogs are no exception. If your dog jumps on you, he’ll definitely jump on other people. This can create an uncomfortable atmosphere for your guests. Take the time to train your dog not to jump up and you’ll be one step closer to a well-mannered companion.

The last method is the person the dog jumps on takes each forepaw in each hand when the dog jumps, holds them, and walks INTO the dog, repeating “OFF, OFF!”, and the dog will roll into a sit or walk clumsily backwards. If necessary (ONLY IF), the paws can be squeezed and/or the rear toes can be lightly stepped on.

The decision to allow your dog on the furniture is a personal one. If you don’t mind some extra fur and occasional muddy paw prints on your cushions, it’s a fine way to spend quality time with your best friend. However, there is an important exception: the dog who thinks that he owns the couch. If your dog has ever growled or snapped at you to maintain his spot on the furniture, or gets surly when you try to move him over, it’s time for his couch privileges to end. Address your dog’s location guarding issues with a professional and then reassess if it’s appropriate to reintroduce couch privileges post-training.

Consistency is important in keeping your dog off the furniture. Make sure that everyone in the household agrees to the “no dogs allowed” policy, because part-time privileges make it harder for your dog to understand the rules. It’s best to keep your dog off the couch from the very beginning, even when he’s a tiny puppy, because it’s much more difficult to un-train the behavior once your dog has gotten used to it.
